District Honors Families’ Contributions to Schools at End-of-Year Family Celebration

Event to feature family-focused workshops on reading, health, and safety, resource fair to help families prepare for the summer break, and FACE Awards Ceremony

PHILADELPHIA — On  June 1, The School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Family and Community Engagement will host its annual End-of-Year Family Celebration, an event that functions both as a way to thank families for their contributions to schools and as a way to kick off summer by highlighting available resources and tips for learning over the break.

“Saying thank you and showing appreciation to our families is critical to our model of family and community engagement in Philadelphia,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent. “From decades of research, we know that greater family engagement equals greater student outcomes. If we want our families to engage in our schools, we need to start by demonstrating our gratitude to them and making them feel welcomed and excited to be a part of their children’s educational journey.”

The event has attracted more than 300 families in the past. This year, families and their children will have the opportunity to enjoy: a Kids’ Zone with organized games and crafts; a resource fair with a “scavenger hunt” challenge to encourage visitation to all tables; a photo booth; appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog, Sesame Street characters, and the Crayola Crayon; free books featuring the year’s top-listed titles; free gift bags and other giveaways; and a raffle featuring tickets to the Philadelphia Zoo, the Please Touch Museum, Dorney Park, and more.
