Board of Education Accepts the Resignation of Vice-President Mallory Fix-Lopez
After 6 years of unwavering commitment to the Board of Education for the School District of Philadelphia, Vice President Mallory Fix-Lopez announces her resignation, effective April 18th, 2024, due to a pre-scheduled medical procedure in mid-April. She has withdrawn her name for consideration for re-appointment to the Board of Education.
Vice-President Fix-Lopez was appointed to the Board of Education in 2018 by then Mayor Jim Kenney and was reappointed in 2020. She was elected Vice President by her peers in December 2022 and re-elected to this executive leadership role in December 2023.
Vice President Fix-Lopez has played a major role in bringing the School District of Philadelphia back to local control after 17 years of state control under the School Reform Commission. She helped author the first ever Goals and Guardrails, the Board’s nationally recognized accountability framework to monitor systems progress, serving as the main facilitator of this work since it launched in January 2021. Additionally, she has been a consistent voice in ensuring compliance of Policy 252, supporting trans and gender non-conforming students, which led to mandated district wide training for all employees as well as gender neutral bathrooms in all schools. Likewise, she has been a persistent voice in the expansion of interpretation and translation services for multilingual students and families, supporting Guardrail 1: Welcoming and Supportive Schools. Vice President Fix-Lopez was a core author of the Board’s Governance Policies (000s) and has also been the lead facilitator of the Superintendent’s Evaluation for both former Superintendent Dr. Hite and Dr. Watlington, currently.
“The City of Philadelphia and the Parker administration expresses its deep thanks to Vice President Mallory Fix-Lopez for her public service not only to the Board of Education for the School District of Philadelphia, but for every child and student educated in our public school system,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “Serving on the School Board is a serious commitment, and to me represents an individual fulfilling one of the most important roles in our democracy: Citizen. We wish Mallory Fix-Lopez all our best.”
“Vice President Fix-Lopez, an incredible educator, colleague and friend, whose service, dedication and sacrifice over the last six-plus years has not only helped to propel the Board’s mission to govern from a student centered perspective with student achievement at its core, but also, she has left an indelible mark on the Board”, said Board President Reginald Streater. “She has been, and I am sure will continue to be, about the work and advocating for our children. Her loss will be deeply felt.”
