This morning the Board of Education held its first Finance and Facilities Committee Meeting at 440 N. Broad Street.

The Board introduced its committee structure at its first meeting on July 9 and adopted the structure at the August 16 meeting. For more information on each committee, please visit the Board of Education website.

“We want these meetings to be a chance for you to gain a better understanding of District spending and matters related to District facilities while also giving us a chance to hear your ideas and concerns,” said Board member and Committee Co-chair, Leticia Egea Hinton.

A representative from the city gave a brief overview of Keystone Opportunity Zones (KOZ), and the School District made two presentations on various operations budgets and facilities renovations and remediations. During the meeting Board members gave speakers an extended amount of time and made comments immediately after.

“Our goal is to work with fellow Philadelphians to share our understanding of the importance of longer-term financial stability for this District,” said Board member and Committee Co-chair, Lee Huang.

All committee meetings will be open to the public, and meeting materials will be posted to the Board’s website in advance of each meeting. Those interested in speaking at the meetings should register by visiting the Board of Education’s website and completing the appropriate Participant Registration Form at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting start time. Participants are also encouraged to submit written testimony or questions and comments in advance of the meeting to schoolboardcommittees@philasd.org.

The next committee meeting will be Student Achievement and Support on Thursday, September 13 at 5:00 p.m.

Visit the Board of Education website for more information on the four committees, their roles, and a meeting calendar.
