The Relationship between Student Performance on Star and PSSA Assessments in 2022-23
Goals 1-3 of the Board’s Goals & Guardrails focus on increasing the percentage of students in grades 3-8 scoring Proficient or Advanced on the PSSA ELA and PSSA Math each year. Because the PSSA is only administered once annually in spring, the District also examines student performance at regular intervals during the school year using a within-year standardized assessment (called Renaissance Star). Performance on the Star assessment is used as a “Leading Indicator” that helps us better understand students’ progress in both reading and math throughout the school year.
Using 2022-23 data, we examined the statistical relationship between students’ Star assessment results and end-of-year PSSA performance. We considered the following questions:
- What were the correlations between the Star Assessments and the PSSAs for ELA and Math?
- Among students who scored At/Above Benchmark on Star, what percentage actually scored Proficient or Advanced on the PSSA for ELA and Math?
While we wait for the results from the Spring 2024 PSSA administration to arrive later this summer, we can use the results from the 2022-23 analyses as information about how students might score on the 2023-24 PSSA.
