The EAT.RIGHT.NOW. (ERN) program delivers nutrition education to all eligible public and charter schools in The School District of Philadelphia (SDP). ERN is funded by the Pennsylvania (PA) Department of Public Welfare through PA Nutrition Education Tracks (PA TRACKS), a part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The PA TRACKS initiative seeks to improve the nutrition and physical activity behaviors of SNAP participants across the state. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, ERN programming was delivered in approximately 250 Philadelphia public and charter schools encompassing grades K-12, implemented by six community partners: SDP, Drexel University, Health Promotion Council, Albert Einstein Medical Center, The Food Trust, and the Urban Nutrition Initiative.

For the 2011-12 school year, this report evaluates the effects of ERN core curriculum on achieving PA TRACKS goals and associated objectives, and the potential effect of nutrition education on students’ snack choices in grades 3-5. This evaluation focuses on several key aspects of the program, including the 4th grade Vegetable Core; the 8th grade Choice, Control, and Change (C3) curriculum; and the sustained impact of nutrition education on students.
