SDP received a grant from the William Penn Foundation to redesign 34 pre-kindergarten to second grade classrooms into interactive learning environments. Physical renovations and classroom set-ups were complete by the end of summer 2017. These renovations and activities built upon the District-wide Early Literacy Strategy already underway in the District. ORE’s evaluation examined five primary questions over the two year grant period:
- To what extent have the renovations and professional development been implemented as intended?
- To what extent are classroom teachers satisfied with the renovations and professional development?
- How do teachers perceive changes to their instructional practices and student outcomes associated with the project?
- To what extent has the program improved teacher-student interactions?
- Did students in the treatment classrooms show growth in literacy and attendance rates? If so, to what degree?
