Parent and Family Engagement / Right to Know
Parent and Family Engagement Tools
The best thing parents can do to support their child(ren)’s academic achievement is get involved in their child(ren)’s schools and to take advantage of various Rights to Know. Parents have a right to know the extent of their child’s progress. This can be achieved by parent-teacher meetings and active involvement through homework assignments as well as reading and conversation with their child.
The School District of Philadelphia (SDP) recognizes that partnerships between families and schools are strong foundations for educational reform. In collaboration with parents and families within the District, the SDP has developed a robust parent and family engagement policy. You can find the full policy as well as a plethora of resources on the Office of Family and Community Engagement’s website or by clicking this link, District-wide parent and family engagement policy which will direct you to the webpage. Additionally, each school, in collaboration with parents, writes its own Family Involvement Policy and School/Parent Compact.
Right to Know Documents
As required by the Every Student Succeeds Act [Section 1112(e)(1)(A)], the Federal law governing K-12 education in the United States, the School District of Philadelphia is required to provide the following Parent Right-to-Know Information.
ESSA requires that parents be notified at the beginning and/or when appropriate anytime during each year of their right to know the professional qualifications of their child’s teacher(s).
