Black History Month
Black History Month was created in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Initially called Negro History Week, the celebration expanded to a full month in 1976, in order to focus even greater attention on the contributions of African Americans in the United States and throughout the diaspora. Today, Black History Month continues to amplify and deepen the exploration and elevation of African Americans and their contributions to society through film screenings, museum exhibits, and by encouraging the study of the accomplishments of African Americans year-round.

Black Histories of Philadelphia!
Explore curated items inspired by some of the physical exhibitions presented by the Free Library as well as a number of web-only presentations based on our digital collections. Black Histories of Philadelphia looks at some of the stories of people and places that make up Philadelphia’s countless histories. Some stories are kept, some fade over time, and others are misrepresented or silenced. The people featured in this exhibition created change through determination and innovation. They overcame obstacles and fought for their successes, just as community members today fight to keep their legacies alive.
Explore these stories of Black Philadelphians and the efforts to preserve their enduring impact.
