November Events & Happenings

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, it is also referred to as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month in order to be inclusive to the many indigenous populations in America. This is a time to reflect on the hard history of colonization that affected the people here before us. It means celebrating and uplifting the voices that have historically been silenced by our history books and reflecting on the importance of preserving histories that were almost forgotten.

The Lenapehoking (Lenni-Lenape) are the people native to the Philadelphia territory where we reside, work, or attend school. Today, one of the ways we try to honor the native people of this area is in a land acknowledgment. Why are land acknowledgments important? Part of equity work involves knowing our history, especially when we discuss marginalized populations who have historically been mistreated. A land acknowledgment is a formal way to recognize the Indigenous peoples who have come before you, and who were often violently removed from their land due to colonization. This is a small, but vital, first step in acknowledging our difficult histories.

Acknowledging, reflecting, and appreciating the indigenous peoples of our country is an essential part of this month.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion is pleased to host the following learning opportunities to support your development and promote efficacy in serving our minoritized populations:

Philadelphia Affinity Group Network Launching

Are you an educator of color who wants to connect with other educators of color? If so, Teach Plus is launching a Philadelphia Affinity Group Network in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia that focuses on cultivating authentic, inclusive, intersectional spaces shaped by and for educators of color.  These affirming and supportive spaces, rooted in an asset-based understanding of diversity, will support educators in navigating and improving their school environments and will be connected to a larger network to build alliances and address systemic issues. If you are interested in learning more or participating in the network, please take a few minutes to complete this interest form.

Affinity groups will begin in January and are open to all BIPOC teachers and other educators of color (in non-administrator roles) in the School District of Philadelphia and Philadelphia-based charter schools. The affinity groups will meet at least monthly (starting in January 2024). Activities during affinity group meetings can include: building a supportive community through heart work & connection; providing professional ideas, support, advice & connection; identifying retention challenges in their districts; and, when feasible and safe, advocating to address those challenges. You can learn more about the Philadelphia Affinity Group Network here.
