Lunar New Year 2023

This year,  Lunar New Year falls on January 22 this year. It is a holiday of  great importance for many of our families in Philadelphia schools. But what does Lunar New Year mean for those who celebrate it? Obviously, across the diaspora of the communities world wide that celebrate Lunar New Year, traditions vary and, over time, change. For me Lunar New Year has always represented the best elements of Thanksgiving and Christmas, a time to celebrate family, community and the “renewal” that comes with each new year. This guide serves to provide some resources for teachers to tie the holiday into the classroom. Wishing everyone a Happy Year of the Rabbit!  – Debbie Wei, Social Studies Curriculum Specialist

Deepening our Commitment to Equity and Justice in Education: Making the Moment a Movement NPEA Conference

Boston, MA on April 12-14, 202

As we acknowledge the work that remains to be done and the need to press on with purpose, this conference will call us to lift up our students, our communities, and ourselves as we climb towards a common goal of equity and justice in education. We will celebrate our cultural identities and our roots, our similarities and differences, and our joys and strengths, as we work to recreate community and implement anti-racist, culturally-centered practices in our programs and institutions. We will also share stories and lessons of adversity from these past few years, spotlighting a variety of ways to meet the evolving needs of students and staff. Throughout the conference, we will center our sharing and learning around student voice and the student experience. We will make space to focus on promising practices and successes that inspire hope within the field and allow us to be leaders in the critical DEIJB conversations that are so integral to this work. And, as always, we will continue to fight for racial justice as we build agency and opportunity for our communities.

City of Philadelphia: DigitalEquityPHL Plan

In Philadelphia, there is a digital divide. Some residents can’t afford internet subscriptions. Others have very old or slow devices. Many rely on free public Wi-Fi, which can be hard to find outside of Center City. “Digital equity” means that every resident has access to reliable internet, devices, and the digital skills needed to use these tools.

The City has a plan to achieve digital equity. We have a team creating and pursuing strategies to support those goals. We’re not doing this alone—we’re working with partners and related programs. To learn more, read about our work.

Read more about the City’s digital equity plan and obtain resources on the City’s page.
