The 2022-2023 school year has been an amazing year for the District’s CTE schools that participated in SkillsUSA. For those who do not know, SkillsUSA is a Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that plays an integral part in CTE at the state and national level. It is a nonprofit educational organization that serves to prepare students for careers. Every year, they host competitions for students to showcase the skills they’ve learned throughout their CTE program. The number of individual CTE programs that participated in SkillsUSA this year more than doubled from last year.
This past January, the Philadelphia Chapter of SkillsUSA held the first district-level competition to select student competitors to represent us at the state-level competition. This district-level competition was held over three days from January 25-27 at the Community College of Philadelphia’s Center West Regional Campus, Murrell Dobbins Career & Technical High School, The Finishing Trades Institute, and here at the Education Center at 440 N. Broad Street. Students participated in many contests, showcasing their excellence in their CTE program. You can read about the results of the local SkillsUSA competition here.
54 students, along with their advisors, attended the PA State SkillsUSA competition held in Hershey, PA for 3 days from April 12-14. Students competed in many contests including Cosmetology, Digital Video Production, Electrical Construction Wiring, Auto Refinishing, Web Design, and more.
Our students won 2 awards at this state competition. From CAPA, J. Cooke and his advisor, Scott Kauffman, won 3rd place in Advertising Design. From Kensington High School, A. Ramos, J. Rivas-Rodriguez, S. Canela, and their advisors Eric Cruz and Shanelle Lockhart, won 1st place in Career Pathways Showcase: Business, Management, and Technology. Congratulations!
Team Kensington will represent The School District of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania at the National convention in Atlanta, GA this summer.
We are so proud of all our students who went to Hershey, PA to participate in the SkillsUSA state conference.
Thank you to all the advisors that supported students in their SkillsUSA adventures this year!
