The School District of Philadelphia has named Ms. Linda Barrett as Teacher of the Month, recognizing her outstanding work with special education students ages 18-22. In her classroom, students learn essential life skills – from reading menus and managing money to cooking and using public transportation. Each lesson is carefully adapted to meet her students’ individual needs, making sure everyone can participate and succeed. Her students practice real-world skills like filling out time sheets, planning budgets, and shopping for groceries, preparing them for independent living.

This year, Ms. Barrett showed incredible strength by continuing to teach while fighting a serious illness. Even on tough days, she came to class ready to help her students learn and grow. Her dedication didn’t go unnoticed – students saw firsthand what it means to push through difficult times. Despite returning to school physically weakened, she maintained her positive attitude and commitment to her students’ success. Her personal battle became an inspiring lesson in never giving up.

Ms. Barrett’s classroom is more than just a place to learn – it’s where young adults discover they can live independently and succeed in life, no matter their challenges. She creates simple solutions, like using large-print sign-in sheets for students who struggle with writing, to help everyone reach their goals. Her students learn crucial domestic skills such as making beds, cleaning, and maintaining a household. They also practice important social and communication skills through community-based activities. Beyond teaching practical skills, Ms. Barrett helps her students build confidence and independence. Her hands-on teaching approach and unwavering belief in her students’ abilities make her the perfect choice for Teacher of the Month.

Ms. Barrett’s impact on her students goes far beyond the classroom. She shows them that with the right support and determination, they can become independent, productive members of society. Her students graduate with not just practical skills, but with the confidence to tackle life’s challenges. This well-deserved recognition celebrates a teacher who truly changes lives, one student at a time.
