“I’m always looking for ways to improve myself,” Shayonna said. “School comes first.”

Mastbaum 10
th Grade Student

Shayonna Edmonds is a 10th grade Honors student at Jules E. Mastbaum High School, a vocational technical school within the School District of Philadelphia and a member of the 9th Grade Success Network (9GSN). Shayonna is a passionate student who enjoys her biology and English classes and loves to play for Mastbaum’s volleyball team – she hopes to make the playoffs this year!

Like many 9th graders, Shayonna was very nervous about the transition to high school. She began her first year at Mastbaum taking on-level courses with her friends, until her assistant principal and several of her teachers recommended she move into Honors classes. “I felt nervous at first because I didn’t know anyone in my new classes,” she said. Soon, Shayonna started to meet her new classmates and make friends, and realized Honors courses were an appropriate academic challenge for her. She credits her teachers and her assistant principal for their support and mentorship during 9th grade with setting her up for success in the coming years. Through her hard work, dedication, and supportive community of teachers, faculty, and administrators at Mastbaum, Shayonna is thriving in 10th grade as a proud, successful Honors student.

“I’m always looking for ways to improve myself,” Shayonna said. “School comes first.” When asked about her future plans, she shared that her love of volleyball has inspired an interest in sports business – she’s excited for her sports marketing shop class this year, and is looking forward to her continued success at Mastbaum and beyond.
