Carver High School of Engineering and Science was full of pride as they honored a true pillar of educational excellence, Mr. John Taylor-Baranik, known fondly as “Mr. TB,” with the title of Teacher of the Month for February 2024.
His role extends beyond the conventional boundaries of an English teacher; Mr. TB spearheads a Senior Seminar class, meticulously guiding students through college applications and interdisciplinary projects. His blend of empathy and accountability has significantly boosted early college application submissions, with an overwhelming majority of students securing placements in prestigious 4-year institutions or embarking on vocational and military paths, a testament to his unwavering commitment and innovative academic strategies. Former students feel that they were very well “prepared for college.” Something special that Mr. TB made happen by creating a school setting like that of higher-level degree programs. He also set up a group of teachers who review work, makes the schoolwork more rigorous and encourages students to research with the dedication of experienced researchers. Mr. TB continues to shine as he empowers students to embrace more challenging coursework, ensuring they are well-prepared for collegiate demands. He has transformed the school’s environment into a hub of intellectual exchange, inviting the community to celebrate student achievements at the Research Fair and inspiring creativity through a competitive screenplay contest for juniors.
Mr. TB’s influence goes beyond the classroom walls as he wears the coach’s hat for the school’s track teams, steering both the Girls and Boys teams to consecutive victories at the Philadelphia Public League Championships. His engagement doesn’t stop there; Mr. TB plays a pivotal role in the School Advisory Committee, Homecoming Committee, and as an Alumni liaison, significantly boosting participation and fostering a strong community spirit.
We are thrilled to honor Mr. TB and delighted that Fox 29 News captured the heartwarming moment of his recognition as February 2024’s Teacher of the Month.
