The Lindback Awards for Distinguished Principals & Teachers
Since 2011, Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation of Philadelphia has recognized and rewarded school principals who have made significant leadership and humanitarian contributions to his/her school community.
Each year, the Lindback Foundation awards 60 distinguished teachers and seven principals from The School District of Philadelphia public schools who demonstrate excellence in promoting learning at the highest levels. The teacher award recipients will be chosen based on their activities that improve the intellectual and character development of students. Similarly, the Lindback Distinguished Principal Award recognizes and rewards school principals who have made significant leadership and humanitarian contributions to his/her school community.
Teacher Nomination Process
The Nomination Review Committee takes into consideration several criteria when determining candidacy. Please carefully read the below information so that you have a smooth nomination process experience!
- Any individual can nominate a teacher.
- A teacher can only receive the award once in a ten-year period
- Candidates can be nominated multiple times
- Candidates must be a teacher who provides services to students on a daily basis

- If you ARE NOT an employee of the District please complete this form so we can direct you to the appropriate point person at the school.
Step 1- Establish the School-based Lindback Award for Distinguished Teachers Nomination Committee
To formally nominate a teacher, schools are required to convene a school-based Lindback Award for Distinguished Teachers nomination committee including, but not limited to, the following:
- The principal
- Two teachers (one of whom shall be a previous Lindback Distinguished Teacher Winner, if applicable)
- One parent (elementary schools only)
- One student (high schools only)
Step 2 - Gather the Supporting Documents & Save as Electronic Files
*Be sure to include the candidate’s name when naming each file.
List of Supporting Documents:
- Candidate’s Abbreviated Biography
- Written Statement Template (Google doc). The Written Statements Template captures all the written responses in one place. When you click the Written Statements Template link, you’ll be prompted to create a copy. Once all of the fields are complete, save the Google doc as a pdf and title the file using the name of the principal. You will need to upload the completed Written Statements Template to the Google nomination form in the final step.
Tip: once you access the Written Statements Template via Google, make sure to create a copy! You can then share your copy with applicable members of your school team for real-time collaboration.
- Optional Letters of Recommendation/endorsement including but not limited to community members, local business owners, parents, and students.
Tip: these optional letters of recommendation must also be electronic files and can be uploaded to the google form in the final step.
Step 3 - Submit the Google Nomination Form
Now that you have completed and saved each of the required supporting documents as electronic files, you can now complete the Google Nomination Form!
NOTE: You will be required to sign in to Google to complete the form.

Whats New?
What’s New
We are pleased to announce a change to the nomination process for the Lindback Award for Distinguished Principals. Effective this year, all principal nominees will be required to participate in an interview as part of the selection process, providing that all components of the application have been submitted.
This change is being made to ensure that we are selecting the most qualified and deserving principals for this prestigious award. The interview will provide the selection committee with an opportunity to learn more about each nominee’s leadership philosophy, values, and strengths.
The selection process will now include the following components:
- Written Statements Questionnaire: Nominee committees are required to complete a written statements questionnaire that addresses a variety of topics, including community engagement, equity-focused leadership, and student outcomes
- Interview: Nominees will participate in a 30-minute interview with members of the principal selection committee
Both the written statements questionnaire and the interview will be considered when selecting the finalists.
We believe that this change to the nomination process will enhance the process and help us to identify and recognize the truly outstanding principals in our district.

What is the Lindback Award for Distinguished Principals and Teachers?
Since 2011, Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation of Philadelphia has been recognizing and rewarding school principals and teachers who have made significant leadership and humanitarian contributions to his/her school community.
The Lindback Award for Distinguished Principals recognizes principals who:
- lead and serve with equity principles in their planning, decision-making, implementation, and evaluation, centering the needs of students and families
- dedicate their time and efforts to public service to benefit the school and community
- demonstrate compassion for other humans by their acts of kindness
- establish high expectations and develop people within their schools and communities
- ensure that conditions and incentives fully support teaching and learning to ensure all students are well prepared to succeed in the 21st century
- create inclusive and diverse school communities
The Lindback Award for Distinguished Teachers recognizes teachers who:
- promote cultural and linguistic inclusivity across various cultures, identities, and backgrounds to cultivate all students’ unique intellect, creativity, talent, and ingenuity
- create a positive, supportive learning environment to advance student proficiency in academic subjects, making learning relevant and fun
serve as a role model to students - establish trusting relationships with students, parents, guardians, and community members by being open & accessible for communication
- motivate students to learn, explore and maximize their spirit of inquiry and critical thinking
- demonstrate various instructional strategies to energize students in positive ways
When is the Lindback Award for Distinguished Principals application due?
Applications are due by noon, January 12, 2024.
When is the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teachers application due?
Teacher nominations are due Monday, February 12, 2024.
Can counselors be nominated for the Distinguished Teachers Lindback Award?
Yes. Counselors are eligible if they teach a rostered course for which students receive a grade.
Can School-Based Teacher Leaders (SBTL) be nominated for the Distinguished Teachers Lindback Award?
Yes. If the SBTL is a teacher of record (teaches a rostered course for which students receive a grade directly from that teacher) for a minimum of 90 minutes each school day.
Who can nominate a Principal?
Any individual can nominate a principal. To formally nominate a principal, schools are required to convene a school-based Lindback Award for Distinguished Principals nomination committee including, but not limited to, the following:
- Two teachers (one of whom shall be a previous Lindback Distinguished Teacher winner, if applicable)
- One parent (elementary schools only)
- One student (high schools only)
What are the criteria for Principals?
Criteria for Principals include, but not limited to:
- Enthusiasm for the success of each student that inspires and motivates others to invest in their time and talent in high-quality learning for all students
- Engagement that supports families, demonstrates passion and kindness that builds unity and civic responsibility across staff, students, families, and community
- Professional commitment to empowering staff in the development and successful implementation of initiatives that better serve students, staff, and the school
- Fostering an environment of mutual respect, appreciation for differences, open communication and personal accountability for the success of all students
- Empowering staff and other stakeholders to assume responsibility for making decisions regarding the school culture and student achievement.
- Use of robust systems to monitor progress towards goals, mobilizing others at the school to support the work backed by relevant supporting data
- Network Assistant Superintendent endorsement

What are the criteria for Teachers?
Criteria for teachers include, but not limited to:
- Creating a positive, supportive learning environment to advance student proficiency in academic subjects, making learning relevant and fun
- Maintaining high expectations and data-informed instruction by using relevant data to inform instructional choices in the classroom
- Proactively building authentic relationships with families and community members by prioritizing time for meaningful engagement at the school, in students’ homes, and in the community
- Making a concerted effort to challenge negative attitudes or practices to ensure that all students, particularly those traditionally underserved, are honored in the school
- Promoting various approaches of pedagogy so that all students can achieve at high levels
In addition, in order to be considered for the award, the candidate must be an employee and appointed as a certified teacher with The School District of Philadelphia. Teachers are eligible for consideration if they have sustained, consistent direct instruction with students and contribute to students’ academic achievement. What are the nomination steps for Principals and Teachers?
The Nomination Review Committee will review a specific set of materials for each candidate. Visit our Nomination Process tab for all the information you’ll need and access to the submission portal.
How will the winner be Chosen?
The Lindback Foundation recommends the previous years winners be invited to serve on the nomination selection committee to recommend and score nominated candidates to the Lindback Foundation to be recipients for the current year’s award.
