Every year, over 34,000 students apply for the prestigious Gates Scholarship, but less than one percent are accepted. Jaylin Carter, a senior at The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and one of only two students from the School District of Philadelphia to receive this honor, has defied the odds in more ways than one. Inspired by her mother, who will soon earn her bachelor’s degree in summer 2024, Jaylin is shattering barriers and proving that no gate is too difficult for those with determination and talent. As a Gates Scholar, Jaylin will have the opportunity to further her education and create a future beyond the limits of her low-income background, paving the way for generations to come. At just five years old, Abduljaleel Shoufan, now a 17-year-old senior at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber (SLA), was forced to flee the only home he had ever known as war ravaged his native Syria. Abduljaleel faced a new obstacle upon his arrival in America: a language barrier that threatened to hinder his progress. Yet, Abduljaleel shattered these barriers, earning the prestigious honor of being named one of only 65 Liberty Scholars at Drexel University. This highly competitive program recognizes exceptional high school graduates from across the country, awarding them a renewable scholarship that covers 100% of tuition and fees. Meet Andrew Zidor (Philadelphia Military Academy), Morgan Hicks (Science Leadership Academy at Beeber), Mikayla Jones (The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts), and Sharai Rollins (Jules E. Mastbaum), four outstanding graduates from the School District of Philadelphia who have excelled in the classroom, served their communities, and inspired future generations. Despite the challenges of a pandemic-disrupted first year, these students thrived at their respective schools. From leadership roles and prestigious programs to embracing new opportunities and finding their passions, each student has made the most of their unique high school experience. As they embark on their separate paths to Temple University, Howard University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and Hofstra University, they carry with them the lessons and support of their schools. These four graduates are a testament to the strength and diversity of the Class of 2024, and they are sure to make their mark as the leaders and changemakers of tomorrow. Kensington Creative & Performing Arts High School (KCAPA), Jules E. Mastbaum, and Science Leadership Academy (SLA) Film, Video, & Digital Media Production students and teachers participated in the 2024 NFL Film’s Student Film Festival at the NFL Studio in New Jersey! Each school went home with $2,500.00 to use towards their CTE programming.
