October 21, 2009 - Schedule of commmunity feed back sessions for School District of Philadelphia's Renaissance Schools Advisory Board.
The School District of Philadelphia's Renaissance Schools Advisory Board also announced a schedule of community feedback sessions designed to gather broad public feedback on the recommendations. The meetings will take place from November 2nd though November 9th, 2009. A copy of the flyer is available here.
Military Opt-Out Form: Students in Grades 11 and 12
The federal and state governments require that The School District automatically release your name, gender, address, telephone number, and school name to military recruiters UNLESS you fill out a student "opt out" form. You may download this form (in English and in translation) and directions on how to submit it by using the link below. Please note that you may sign and return the form yourself since a parent signature is not required. The signed form must be returned to your advisor by October 23, 2009.
STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST for middle and high school students.
Win an IPod and a laptop or desktop computer by submitting a winning essay on the topic, "How Can Parents Partner with My School?" See the flyer for details, rules, and regulations. Winners will be announced at the 4th Annual Parent Appreciation Day event (440 North Broad Street) on Saturday, October 3rd at noon.
Summer Learning Opportunities
On July 1, The School District of Philadelphia will launch the largest and most comprehensive summer learning program in recent memory. This year’s summer program includes opportunities for students to improve their academic skills, to explore new interests, and to acquire new knowledge. These opportunities are free and available to all District students, including those with special needs and those who are English Language Learners.
Excellence, Equity, and Accountability 2014 - Information on Strategic Planning, Community Engagement, and Graduation 2014 Working Groups
We are excited to invite you to assist us in constructing a long-term strategic plan to achieve excellence, equity, and accountability in our District. Over the next few weeks and months, we will be looking for your input to create a plan to accomplish the following three goals:
A. Excellence - Providing every student with a world-class education while eliminating differences in achievement between students based on area of residence, ethnicity, race, gender, or program placement.
B. Equity - An equitable allocation of resources based on student needs.
C. Accountability - Accountability for all adults in the District based on student achievement.
A Letter on Safety to Parents and Students
School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Arlene C. Ackerman began sending letters home to all District parents on October 15 reminding families of the District's Code of Student Conduct. The District has a "zero tolerance policy towards violence of any kind in our schools, on the property of our schools, or during any school sanctioned activity".
The School District of Philadelphia has translated the letter into various languages.
School Safety Advisory Committee: Final Report to the School Reform Commission
The School Safety Advisory Committee (SSAC) was established to discuss discipline procedures, safety and climate issues, alternative programs for students with behavior management problems, and other related discipline issues of particular interest, to ensure fair treatment for students in the disciplinary process, and also to review publicly available safety data to determine trends that may require emergency response or crisis management.

Code of Student Conduct
The School District of Philadelphia is committed to creating a safe, positive environment for all of our students, staff, parents, and community partners. As a student, you should be familiar with the Code of Student Conduct to ensure you help create a safe, positive environment at your school.
The District has adopted a Code of Student Conduct to support this commitment. The purpose of this Code is to clearly state our standards for acceptable conduct of students and to explain the consequences of not meeting these standards of conduct.
